OEKO-TEX® INTRODUCES ENHANCED PFAS TESTING METHOD
At Lyngsoe Rainwear, we want to keep you informed about an important update from OEKO-TEX® regarding how PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are tested in textiles. Starting from October 1, 2024, OEKO-TEX® will be using a new method called alkaline hydrolysis in their testing process.
Previously, some PFAS were difficult to detect because they were chemically bonded to the fabric, making them invisible to standard tests. The new method breaks these bonds, allowing for a more thorough and accurate detection of all PFAS present in the material.
PFAS are chemicals commonly used in the textile and leather industries to make products water- and stain-resistant. However, they have come under increasing attention because they can be harmful to both human health and the environment. With this new testing approach, OEKO-TEX® is taking an important step to ensure that products are safer and that their certifications meet the latest European and US regulations.
As regulations continue to evolve, stricter guidelines for PFAS are expected to be introduced.
